Zürich – the city for everything life has to offer
First-rate quality of life
Zürich’s 367,000 residents, 180,000 commuters and millions of
visitors enjoy a standard of comfort that is second to none: the
city has repeatedly been voted the location with the highest quality
of life anywhere in the world. The region’s excellent public
transport facilities, good international rail links and nearby
Zürich Airport make travel easy and convenient.
A business hub
Zürich – capital of the canton of the same name – is the largest
city of an urban agglomeration numbering over one million people. It
is also Switzerland’s premier business hub and one of the world’s
leading financial centres. Universities and colleges (attracting
over 40,000 students) as well as prestigious research institutes
make Zürich a focus for innovative science and research. Excellent
primary health care and clinics providing cutting-edge medical
treatment ensure that the health care available in Zürich ranks
amongst the best in the world
A cultural metropolis
The Zürich Opera House is one of the world’s leading opera and
ballet venues, and the Tonhalle (concert hall) and Schauspielhaus
(city theatre) also enjoy a first-class international reputation.
The city boasts some 50 museums, including the Kunsthaus (Museum of
Fine Art), the Rietberg Museum and the Swiss National Museum.
Zürich’s old town, churches, squares, sculptures, parks, gardens and
the zoo, with its superb Masoala Rainforest Hall, are just some of
the major places of interest.
A leisure city
Since the late 1990s many people have come to regard Zürich as the
most fashionable European city of all. Over 2,000 restaurants
serving dishes from around the world, some 100 hotels with 12,000
beds and a vibrant nightlife with just under 500 bars, nightclubs
and discos make this city on the River Limmat the perfect leisure
and tourist destination. For shoppers, the Bahnhofstrasse, the old
town and numerous markets offer something for every taste and
budget. The international athletics meeting “Weltklasse Zürich”, the
Swiss Open Tennis Tournament, the “Zürimetzgete” bike race and the
CSI Zürich (indoor showjumping) are firm fixtures on the calendar of
events, as are Sechseläuten (the traditional spring festival), the
Zürich Street Parade, the Zürich Theatre Festival and the Zürich
Lakes and mountains on the doorstep
In the summer, everyone in Zürich heads for the lake and the rivers.
The Uetliberg, the local ‘mountain’, is also a very popular
destination in winter. Zürich is the gateway for trips into the
Alps, which are just one to two hours away by public transport.
